Solid Oak Dog boxes made to the customers sizes and specification. Based on a standard design you see a lot with dog boxes / roof lights with the addition of some of my own design – a plastic 22mm pipe which has a slot running almost down its entire length! This slot collects any water from the hinge assembly above via an Oak funnel shaped gutter. I have done this as I didn’t like the idea of any water sitting in a groove directly on the Oak – any standing water will fall into the slotted pipe and will run off or sit there instead. I looked at this pipe being in brass or aluminium, however plastic will be better as this will be less likely to condensate.
Most of the parts are screwed in place with brass screws so can be disassembled for any maintenance in some years time. The main body of the dog box is permanently fastened with dovetail joins and the window frames with mortise and tenon joints, where 2 boards meet on the edge these are joined with hidden biscuits (flat wood dowels). Also, I have included a rubber gasket and drip stripes in the appropriate places to help prevent water ingress.
All loose parts have been Osmo oiled on all faces before assembly, so any hidden faces are protected, especially the end grain, also all screw clearance holes and pilot holes have also been oiled, (the pilot holes are done mostly to lubricate the brass screw, to help prevent shearing off!). As you can see the bigger dog box is awaiting it’s toughened glass, but other than this is complete. All fixings and catches in solid brass, all wood work in solid Oak with Osmo 420 Extra finish.
