Solid Oak cabinet, dovetail construction

I made this unit to match the existing solid Oak doors already installed in the lovely building. The wood and finish had to be alike, as if they had been made at the same time. The outer carcase of the unit is fastened together with dovetails. The doors are mortise and tenon jointed with a cladding of similar design to the existing larger doors. All mounted on solid brass castors, with solid brass fixtures.

Kitchen Fit Out

I was asked to help install some traditional solid Oak doors at a house local to where I live and ended up fitting all the interior doors, skirting / architrave to the whole house, making solid Oak radiator plinths for all the radiators, finish the kitchen and then make a bespoke book shelf around a doorway. This kind of, “builder joinery”, isn’t normally what I’m asked to do, but I was approached as the work wasn’t really straight forward as the house was an old cottage and required time crafting some of the elements around the rounded corners and uneven floors. A nice project to be involved in and rewarding to see the end result.

Large School “Big Book”, Book Case

Made in quality, durable birch ply to suit space available in the corridor. Made specifically to suit infant school Big Books with vertically dividers to make deep storage compartments. Made offsite as four modules and brought to school to be installed by myself. You wouldn’t have thought the units and tools to install it could be transported by a land rover and a shop built trailer in one trip! The unit appears quite small in scale as the books are big, but  big book unit is actually 2440mm wide x 610mm deep x 1220mm high. Also seen here is a smaller mobile book unit also in birch ply.

Twin door Solid Oak notice board with birch ply back

Solid Oak twin door design with mortise lock based on an older notice board that this one replaces. Sikkens brand light Oak finish, toughened 4mm glass, all brass screws and hardware throughout with engraved signing. This notice board also has the benefit of have LED lighting installed in the void being the sign, (installed by others), so can be illuminated at night. All my notice boards include a rubber gasket around the doors, drip stripes and vents to help avoid damp and condensation. The finish and design of this notice board should give a maintenance cycle of 5 years to keep it looking new.

Porthole Vent liners in solid Oak supplied finish in Osmo 420 Extra Oil

Another set of 13 liners made along with 2 dog boxes for the same customer. (Click here for the Dog Box post) Normally all the liners I make are sent self colour (no finish), sanded smooth ready for the customer to coat. However on this occasion I was asked to finish them in the Osmo oil. On these it has been brush applied, being lightly sanded between coats to smooth off any raised grain and to act as a key for the next coat. The finish does have minor brush strokes present, but these are along the grain or circumference and is fitting for the job in hand. I am going to experiment with different methods of applying this type of oil to achieve a more flawless finish, so that I may be able to offer this service at an economical rate.  As per most of the round items I make these have been produced in a traditional manor using my old Harrison wood turning lathe.

Pair of Solid Oak Dog Boxes / Roof Hatches

Solid Oak Dog boxes made to the customers sizes and specification. Based on a standard design you see a lot with dog boxes / roof lights with the addition of some of my own design – a plastic 22mm pipe which has a slot running almost down its entire length! This slot collects any water from the hinge assembly above via an Oak funnel shaped gutter. I have done this as I didn’t like the idea of any water sitting in a groove directly on the Oak – any standing water will fall into the slotted pipe and will run off or sit there instead. I looked at this pipe being in brass or aluminium, however plastic will be better as this will be less likely to condensate.

Most of the parts are screwed in place with brass screws so can be disassembled for any maintenance in some years time. The main body of the dog box is permanently fastened with dovetail joins and the window frames with mortise and tenon joints, where 2 boards meet on the edge these are joined with hidden biscuits (flat wood dowels). Also, I have included a rubber gasket and drip stripes in the appropriate places to help prevent water ingress.

All loose parts have been Osmo oiled on all faces before assembly, so any hidden faces are protected, especially the end grain, also all screw clearance holes and pilot holes have also been oiled, (the pilot holes are done mostly to lubricate the brass screw, to help prevent shearing off!). As you can see the bigger dog box is awaiting it’s toughened glass, but other than this is complete. All fixings and catches in solid brass, all wood work in solid Oak with Osmo 420 Extra finish.

Solid Ash Window, Porthole and Mushroom Vent Trims

I’ve been making quite a few of these recently, but tend not to post them here as I will fill the site with just porthole liners! These however are a little different as they have a rounded face of a thicker section than usual, so are a good example of a different type of profile. Also, here we have window trims with rounded corners which use every aspect of routing rather than the traditional turning of the round liners. The window trims are made over sized and routed and sanded to size. A skilled and labour intensive task to get them to sleeve over the metal frame of a window with only 1-2mm of clearance. Also a nice example of how a matching profile can be used on mushroom trims, porthole and window liners.

Notice Board Solid Ash and Birch ply

Quality twin door notice board made from solid Ash mounted on brushed stainless steel posts with stainless and brass fittings throughout. The glass is 4mm toughened, the doors have twin mortise locks and a double gasket weather seal. The finish is a high quality UV resistant Sikkens branded oil based type with a 5 year maintenance cycle. The title is engraved and can be solid painted if required. The board itself is securely mounted onto the posts with M6 bolts, 4 of which can only be accessed from the inside so is anti theft. I was happy be asked to make this project as it was for my old design teacher from back in the day! It’s rewarding to make a nice job for a good group of people.

Home Study / Office

Here we have the furniture I have made for a home study that I was asked to produce. All the materials were sourced locally for the project (as with the majority of my work), and produced by hand. It is entirely made from solid Oak with exposed through dovetails which are all individually cut. Made to the customers sketch to suit the room. All made and fitted by myself, (Well, I had a little help from my father in  law with the fitting as the units were very heavy 🙂 )
